You Can’t Outskate a Missing Mindset
I had the skates, the gear—even baked them like a pro. What I didn’t have was Mindful Presence.
My favorite sport to watch during the Winter Olympics was always Speedskating. I remember being in awe of the seemingly effortless way they defied gravity, hovering just inches above the ice as they leaned into each turn. I loved it so much that when I discovered that the county I lived in had a recreational league, I enthusiastically gave it a try. I even bought the special skates and even put them in the oven like a pro so they would mold perfectly to my feet.
I had done everything needed to physically prepare me to participate. But needless to say, speedskating was a lot harder than it looked on television, and after a short time, I gave up and quit. Looking back, I realize that although i was physically prepared, I was far from mentally prepared.
I hadn’t considered what speedskating would involve, the discipline, the mindset, or what being part of the team would require. My focus was entirely on the physical requirements. What I was missing was a strength more powerful than physical ability: Mindful Presence.
Understanding Mindful Presence
Mindful presence is not just a fleeting moment of clarity; it is a continuous flow of awareness and intentional focus that allows us to be fully engaged and aware of the present moment without judgment. It helps you perform at your best by grounding you in the moment, tuning into your body, managing your emotions, and building sustainable mental and physical strength. It allows you to fully show up and thrive in the experience, outside of the competitive side of the sport.
Even though my days of dreaming of speedskating are long over, mindful presence continues to enhance my mental clarity, emotional intelligence, and overall well-being. It allows me to observe my thoughts and emotions with curiosity and compassion, resulting in a greater understanding of myself and how I relate to others.
Through the integration of mindfulness into everyday activities, it’s easy and fun to practice Mindful Presence and foster the inner strength that resides within you.
Embracing Your Inner Strength
The Power of Breath: Make time to deliberately focus on deep, intentional breathing for one to two minutes.
Gratitude Practice: Express gratitude daily through naming three things you give gratitude for in your life.
Self-Discovery: Everyday ask yourself three questions: “What do I need today?”, “Where am I today mentally, emotionally, and physically?” and “Are my choices aligning with the life I want to live?”
Nurturing Your Mindful Momentum
Mindful Movement: Engage in activities that connect your mind and body, such as yoga, tai chi, or a simple walk in nature.
Digital Detox: Turn of the phone, or put it out of sight for a designated period of time or at a minimum turn off notifications.
Mindful Eating: Notice your food while you eat. Eat slowly and appreciate the tastes, textures, and aroma of your food while you eat.
The Ripple Effect of Inner Strength
As you cultivate your inner strength through mindful presence, you'll notice a ripple effect in various aspects of your life. Your relationships may deepen, your resilience may grow stronger, and your overall well-being may experience a positive shift. Remember, the journey of self-discovery is uniquely yours, and each step you take contributes to the masterpiece of your life.
Allow mindful presence to enable you to
fully show up and thrive in each experience, to embrace your journey with an open heart, a curious mind, and a healthy determination to unlock the unlimited potential that resides within you.
Be Well,
Nicole
